About Me - Steve Rhodes

I have become an old retiree but I’m fortunate in that I always had an interesting job and never had to resort to working at places like KFC or MacDonalds, which didn’t exist back then anyway, thank Heaven.

I read the other day that the so called Millenials or Genexers of today will have about 10 years shaved off their life spans as a result of living almost exclusively on gastronomic garbage delivered to their homes by Uber Eats motor bike riders at all hours of the day or night.

My first job at the age of 18, back in 1958, was at the Queensland Museum – a weird place full of weird people. But I was lucky when I became involved in a breeding programme there that saw an animal that hadn’t been seen in about 100 years brought back from the brink of extinction and I was able to immortalise the event on sparkling 35mm colour film.

I am still very interested in photography and recently was able to photograph another very interesting event on a late afternoon walk with our German Shepherd “Luna”.

It was raining lightly and getting dark when we came across these two large mushrooms. I decided to take a photo so dressed the set with my purple umbrella and tastefully included Luna’s orange rubber ball (which is the size of a tennis ball) to show their size.

I must add, at this stage, that they looked quite normal and it was only later, when we got home and viewed the photo on the computer, that we noticed that they were GLOWING!

I know that the first reaction of many will be to say “Yes, but you’ve done all that with Photo Shop”. However I have never worked with Photo Shop in my life ( it’s an experience in store maybe when I’ve finished this project), so there must be other forces at play. Maybe the local fairies were starting to build a fairy ring for that night’s dancing, and Luna and I interrupted them.
